Homework and Technology

Every week we have pretty consistent homework. Technology can be a part of that homework or used as an addition or to keep the brain fresh when a child is out sick or over the weekend. Today I shared with the children Raz-kids, which is an on-line book room for children. Children can read just right books, have books read to them, and take quizzes about the books all while earning points for their Raz rockets. There is a link in the reading section of the blog (right sidebar). 15 minutes of Raz-kids can be logged on their reading log in the place of a book or other paper reading material. Spellingcity.com is homework for practicing our spelling words every Thursday night. However, words are usually posted on Monday so it could be used all week and in addition to Wednesday night’s written homework. In math, we have not used technology as homework; however, the Xtramath website (also in the links of the blog) is a great way for children to practice their basic addition and subtraction facts. Remember that all 3rd graders are expected to be able to complete 36-40 addition and 36-40 subtraction basic facts in 2 minutes by the end of 3rd grade. Finally, your child copies down homework from the homework chart (see picture below) each day at school. If you have a question about what the homework is, please either check their binder or the general outline of homework is listed on the Homework page of the blog. As with any skill, it takes practice to get better-school is no exception. Thank you for helping your child practice school every night with their homework!

Magnets and Electricity

We have been working on Magnets and Electricity since our return to school in January. Students have experimented with magnets and the force of attraction. Next, we experimented with static electricity. Students designed their own inquiry experiments, tested them and recorded their results. Finally, we are experimenting with electricity. Students will learn about switches, circuits, and schematic diagrams. All the learning is “shocking”!!!
